Thinking about upgrading my water heater. While the upfront cost of a tankless system is higher, the idea of never running out of hot water during a Portland rainstorm is pretty appealing. Plus, less energy waste means more money for local craft beer!

Tank vs. Tankless Water Heater: Which is Right for You?

Tankless water heaters heat water on demand, eliminating standby heat loss and offering continuous hot water. Traditional tank heaters store and pre-heat a set volume of water, leading to potential energy waste. While tankless units have higher upfront and installation costs, their long-term energy savings and compact size make them an efficient choice for many households.

Tankless seems like the way to go for efficiency, but make sure you size it right for your needs. I've seen folks in Raleigh underestimate how much hot water a shower and dishwasher running simultaneously can use, especially if you're also trying to do laundry. Over-sizing can negate some of the energy savings, and under-sizing means you're back to waiting for hot water.
